Why set intentions?

“Our intention creates our reality.” -Wayne Dyer

Intention setting may sound new age and like wishing on a star but that is far from the case.

Intention setting is a powerful, potentially life-changing practice, not because of some magic that goes on (at least not that we know of). But because intentions ask us to become aware of our thoughts and actions. Intentions help us bring awareness of how we act and interact in the world.

Intentions are often confused with goals but they are not the same. Goals are results-oriented. Intentions are awareness oriented.

“I want to lose 10 pounds.” Is a goal. It’s results-oriented.

“I want to eat foods that truly nourish me.” Is an intention, it asks us to bring awareness to the quality of food that we eat.

Intentions, when held firmly and remembered often, guide us through relationships, work, our yoga practice, LIFE. If you have never set one before, here are a couple of questions to get you started. Answer one of these questions, write it down and recall it throughout the rest of your day.

  • What feeling would you like to have more of?
  • How would you like to interact with the world?
  • In what way would you like to react to difficult situations?
  • What attachments would you like to release?

The more you recall your intention, the more awareness you will have of it.

What intention do you have for today?
